Donegal Tweed
Orwell & Browne is an award winning Irish heritage brand created by Catriona Mc Ginley. In this image we see, grandad John Mc Ginley from Kilcar, Donegal, hand-weaving tweed on a traditional wooden loom in the 1970s. The craft of weaving tweed fabric has been a tradition in the Mc Ginley family for the past three generations. Orwell & Browne products are designed and made in Ireland using locally sourced Donegal Tweed.
Donegal Tweed is traditionally a handwoven wool fabric characterised by its distinctive flecks of colour, manufactured in Co. Donegal, Ireland. The history, techniques and expertise in transforming sheep’s wool into luxurious cloth is a tradition that has been passed down through the generations.
The artistry of Donegal Tweed reflects its primary source of inspiration – the natural beauty surrounding the makers. Donegal has had a strong weaving tradition for centuries and remains the heartland of our national cloth. We are proud to work with the best mills and weavers Ireland has to offer.
Donegal Merino Yarn
100% Merino wool traditionally spun at Donegal Yarns in Kilcar, Co Donegal. At the mill, the raw wool goes through a complete vertical production process, through dying, blending, carding and spinning to a finished multi-colour flecked yarn.
A team of craftspeople and technicians, using skills handed down through generations, work to produce these unique yarns. The mill is a mixture of traditional and state of the art machinery, ensuring that consistent, luxury yarns are produced with no compromise to quality and tradition.
